The FocusPod Accessible is a wheelchair accessible acoustic office pod with an 872 mm clear door opening and 2070 × 1560 mm of clear internal floor — enough for the wheelchair footprint plus a turning space, which is the dimension standard phone booths fail on. It seats up to four, gives 30 dB speech level reduction (Class A, ISO 23351), exchanges the air roughly every 2.2 minutes, and runs from one standard 240 V power point. A second door on the rear wall is available as an option, giving straight-through access with no turn required. Free-standing furniture: no trades, no building works and no council approval.

Why only one shell works

Sizing

The most common mistake we see in a fit-out brief is specifying a standard booth and assuming a wider door solves it. It does not.

A wheelchair footprint alone fills most of a one-person booth. Getting through the door is only half the problem — you also need somewhere to turn. Once you add a turning space to the footprint, you are into meeting-pod dimensions. Here is how that plays out across the range.

The second thing worth checking early is the approach. A pod that works inside is not accessible if it is wedged between a desk bank and a walkway with 700 mm in front of the door. Send us the floor plan and we will mark the circulation space along with the footprint.

Add a second door

Optional

The accessible pod can be built with a second door on the rear wall. It is the single most useful option on this model, for two reasons.

Straight-through access. With doors at both ends, a wheelchair user enters one side and leaves the other. No turn required at all, which makes the pod comfortable for larger power chairs and for anyone who finds turning in a confined space difficult.

A second way out. Some facilities managers and access consultants prefer a second egress on an enclosed space used by a person who may need assistance. A rear door answers that before it is asked.

The rear door is a custom build rather than a stock item, so it adds to the lead time. It also means the interior and exterior colours can be changed at the same time at no extra cost, since the unit is being made to order either way. What we can and cannot claim

AS 1428.1 governs design for access and mobility in buildings. A pod is free-standing furniture rather than building fabric, so it is not certified against the standard the way a doorway or a ramp is — and any supplier handing you a certificate for one is worth asking what it actually certifies.

What we do instead is build to the same dimensional logic, publish the measured figures, and supply dimensioned drawings so your access consultant or certifier can assess the fit-out as a whole. The two dimensions that decide whether an enclosed booth works are the clear opening and the turning space.

Figures shown are the dimensions commonly applied under AS 1428.1. Which clauses apply depends on the building classification and how the space is used. Confirm the applicable requirements with your access consultant or certifier before specifying — we supply dimensioned plan and elevation drawings for that review at quote stage. Acoustic testing was carried out on the standard shell; the accessible configuration has not been separately re-tested.

Do office pods need to be DDA compliant?

What procurement is really asking
The short answer

No supplier can certify a pod under the DDA

The Disability Discrimination Act covers the provision of goods, services and facilities. It does not certify furniture. There is no such thing as a "DDA compliant office pod" certificate, and a supplier offering one is selling you paperwork that will not survive a tender review.

The question that actually matters is whether every member of staff can use the facility you are providing. If a bank of pods is the only private space on the floor and none of them can be entered by a wheelchair user, that is where the exposure sits — in the fit-out, not in the pod.

Most organisations resolve it the same way: include at least one accessible pod in the mix and record the dimensions in the fit-out documentation. Government, university and health procurement increasingly asks for it explicitly.

From access consultants and procurement

Is an office pod wheelchair accessible?

Most are not. A typical single-person booth is roughly a metre square inside, which a wheelchair footprint fills on its own, leaving no room to turn once inside.

An accessible office pod is a different build: a wider clear door opening, enough internal floor to enter, turn and exit, and a work surface with knee clearance underneath. The FocusPod Accessible has an 872 mm clear opening and 2070 × 1560 mm of clear internal floor. Specify an accessible model rather than assuming a standard pod will work.

What are the AS 1428 clearance requirements for a booth?

AS 1428.1 sets out design requirements for access to buildings. The provisions most relevant to an enclosed booth are the minimum clear door opening (850 mm), the circulation space needed to turn and exit facing forward (2070 × 1540 mm), reach ranges for controls, and the knee and toe clearance under a work surface. It also covers circulation on the approach and latch side of the doorway, which is a fit-out consideration rather than a pod one.

Which clauses apply depends on the building classification and how the space is used, so confirm with your access consultant. We supply dimensioned drawings for that review.

Do office pods need to be DDA compliant?

The Disability Discrimination Act applies to the provision of goods, services and facilities, not to individual furniture items, so a pod cannot be certified compliant the way a building element is. What matters is whether the facility as a whole is accessible.

If pods are the only place staff can take a private call and none can be used by a wheelchair user, that is where an access problem arises. Most organisations include at least one accessible pod in the mix, which is also how it tends to be written into government and university procurement.

How wide does a wheelchair accessible doorway need to be?

AS 1428.1 specifies a minimum clear opening of 850 mm for an accessible doorway. The figure that matters is the clear opening width, measured through the passage when the door is open — not the nominal door leaf size, which is always larger.

The standard also requires circulation space on the approach and latch side so a user can position themselves to operate the door. A wide leaf on its own does not make a doorway accessible if there is no room to approach it. The FocusPod Accessible door passage is 872 × 2042 mm.

What size pod fits a wheelchair?

As a rule of thumb, one and two-person pods do not work. A 1.2 m² booth is too narrow to enter, and 2.2 m² and 3.2 m² pods either lack the depth or the width to turn in. You need floor area for the chair footprint plus a turning space, which in practice means a meeting-sized shell.

The FocusPod Accessible is 4.1 m² internally at 2070 × 1560 mm, which is why it is the only shell in the range offered in an accessible configuration. Send the room dimensions and how the pod will be used and we will mark the clearances on a plan.

Can I have a door on both ends?

Yes. A second door on the rear wall is available as an option, and on an accessible pod it is worth considering. With a door at each end a wheelchair user enters one side and leaves the other, so no turn is needed inside at all. It also gives a second way out of an enclosed space, which some facilities managers prefer.

Does an accessible pod need council approval or a building certifier?

Requirements depend on the site and proposed installation. Confirm the pod position with your building manager or landlord, and ask the relevant council or building certifier whether approvals are needed before ordering. Include floor loading, access, fire services and ventilation in the site review.

That is separate from your access obligations for the fit-out as a whole, which is why we supply dimensioned drawings your access consultant can review.

Can it be moved once it is installed?

Yes. The pod sits on heavy-duty casters and can be repositioned as the floor plan changes, and it disassembles into panels that pass through standard doorways and commercial lifts if you move offices entirely.

Check the packed pallet dimensions against your goods lift before ordering — 2200 × 1250 × 1240 mm. That length is the figure that fails an older CBD tower lift, so send us the internal lift dimensions and we will confirm before you commit.

How soundproof is it?

30 dB speech level reduction, rated Class A under ISO 23351 — the highest band — with reverberation time held under 0.4 seconds. In practice a normal speaking voice inside is not intelligible outside: someone a metre away knows a conversation is happening and cannot make out the words.

That testing was carried out on the standard shell. The accessible configuration has not been separately re-tested.
